Passive crystal oscillators are commonly used in areas that require lower accuracy and higher costs. Although the accuracy, anti-noise performance, and anti-interference performance of passive crystal oscillators are somewhat different from those of active crystal oscillators, terminal manufacturers will also consider cost factors when choosing crystal oscillators. The price of passive crystal oscillator is only one-fifth to one-tenth of that of active crystal oscillator, and it is widely used in circuits. For example, the Bluetooth transmission, infrared function of the mobile terminal, and the timing function of the timer and clock can be completed by only a passive crystal oscillator.
Passive crystal oscillator production and sales account for a large share in the crystal oscillator market. According to CS&A data, in 2018, the global output value of frequency components made of quartz crystals was 3.3 billion U.S. dollars, of which the output value of passive products was 1.8 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 55.3%. The annual sales volume of quartz crystal frequency components is 18 billion, of which the sales volume of passive products is 16.445 billion, accounting for 89.3%. According to the data of the Piezoelectric Crystal Industry Association (PCAC), the sales volume of passive crystal oscillators made of various materials such as quartz and ceramics in the domestic market reached 18.57 billion in 2016, of which the sales volume of tuning fork crystal resonators and micro SMD high frequency crystal resonators They were 8.51 billion and 10.06 billion, with sales of 1.46 billion yuan and 4.93 billion yuan respectively.
After the epidemic, domestic manufacturers continued to raise prices, and the domestic substitution of passive crystal oscillators ushered in an opportunity. Comparing the parameters of the low-frequency and high-frequency crystal resonators of the four crystal oscillator manufacturers, there is no significant difference in the passive crystal category between Japanese, Taiwanese, and mainland manufacturers. At present, relying on the advantages of labor costs and market scope, the country has once developed into a major manufacturing base for passive crystal oscillators. In 2020, the new crown epidemic has caused a reduction in global crystal oscillator production capacity, and the supply and demand situation has changed. After March, the domestic situation has gradually improved and the release of production capacity is imminent, and the crystal oscillator industry has ushered in an opportunity for domestic substitution. According to public information, domestic crystal oscillator companies have also suspended a new round of price increases on products on February 20, and the advantages of domestic manufacturers in the passive category will gradually become prominent.
